Primary Languages - Spanish
Languages Hub Leader:
Jamie Evans is the Deputy Headteacher and English Leader at Sandgate Primary School, which is recognised as an accredited Talk for Writing Training Centre. He also supports other schools nationally and internationally on school improvement projects to develop Talk for Writing and Talk for Reading.
Jamie believes that reading opens the door both to incredible new worlds and to the wider curriculum, and that learning to write gives children the voice to communicate their ideas and grow their imagination. He has a passion for storytelling and story play, and his research for a Masters in Education allowed for greater exploration into the complexity of how children learn to comprehend.
Curriculum Vision: Primary Languages

The aim of the Primary Languages curriculum at Sandgate Primary is to progressively build knowledge, such that all pupils are supported to know more and do more as they move through the school, on to secondary education and into later life. The curriculum is designed around both substantive and disciplinary concepts to ensure that all pupils successfully learn the discipline of learning a language, along with the practical and theoretical knowledge that comprises the subject. The curriculum is supported by rigorous assessment approaches that accord all pupils the opportunity to demonstrate what they know and can do, whilst allowing gaps to be identified and addressed without impacting negatively on learning.
Substantive Threads: Primary Languages
Each unit within the Primary Languages curriculum at Sandgate, supported by Language Angels, is designed to progressively develop the following practical and theoretical strands of substantive knowledge:
- Phonological awareness: explore the patterns and sounds of the Spanish language and link the spelling, sound and meaning. Develop accurate pronunciation.
- Vocabulary: know and be able to use more words, phrases and sentences in Spanish.
- Conversation: listening, joining in and responding, asking and answering questions, expressing opinions, seeking clarification and help, presenting ideas.
- Literature: read and write words, phrases and sentences in Spanish; appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes.
- Grammar: understanding the grammar of Spanish, including masculine and feminine forms.
Disciplinary Threads: Primary Languages
Each unit within the Primary Languages curriculum at Sandgate, supported by Language Angels, is designed to progressively develop children’s knowledge of the discipline of learning a language. Units have been organised around developing this in the following area(s):
- Multilingualism: learning the benefits of multilingualism to individuals and society, including for practical and global communication, trade, exposure to wider literature and a greater cultural & historical awareness.
